ADIPEC has further advanced its sustainability efforts by reporting the carbon footprint of the 2023 edition of the conference to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and mitigating part of this carbon footprint by using the UNFCCC Carbon Offset Platform.
In line with its overall goal to reduce carbon emissions, carbon credits corresponding to a determined percentage of the emissions produced in ADIPEC 2023 were purchased through the UNFCCC Carbon Offset Platform. These credits contributed to two different initiatives—one in Hazira city and the other in Jegurupadu village in India.
Both projects help to de-carbonise the energy system, in accordance with the “fossil fuel switch” perceived as needed for the energy transition, by diverting from coal to less carbon-intensive natural gas. The projects also help mitigate consumption of dwindling fossil fuel resources, and the high carbon emissions that are usually linked to coal-fired electricity generation.
As a global organisation dedicated to excellence, dmg events is aware of the need to practice sustainability and is making a step towards ADIPEC, our flagship event, by helping to reduce the carbon footprint of events, the journey to sustainability will continue and be a long one, and dmg events is committed to do more in the future.
As part of the global events and meetings industry's “Net Zero Carbon Events” pledge signed by dmg events in 2021, the organisation has started its carbon reduction journey, which also aligns with the objectives of the Paris Climate Accord. ADIPEC also bolstered its sustainability efforts in 2023 by becoming a signatory of the UNFCCC Climate Neutral Now Pledge, which requires the event to regularly report its emissions footprint.
In 2023, ADIPEC also announced its strategy to meet the challenge of reducing carbon emissions including several sustainability related initiatives, including:
Implementation of the ADIPEC Carbon Management Plan for monitoring, reporting and offsetting emissions.
Creation and implementation of a carbon tracking tool for ADIPEC vendors and suppliers.
Elaboration of a detailed Exhibitor Manual and sustainability guidelines, promoting over 2,200 exhibitors to become more environmentally responsible through their practices and behaviours, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Carrying out carbon awareness building workshops with stakeholders before ADIPEC, which promotes understanding, collaboration and actions for a carbon neutral event.
Maximizing the reuse of materials on-site, such as temporary facilities, equipment and signage.
Implementing waste segregation and recycling systems, leading to 6.58 tonnes of cardboard and paper materials being recycled.
Providing partial electricity supply to the outside tent structures using solar power during the event.
Many of the sustainability measures adopted at ADIPEC 2022 will be carried forward and additional sustainability solutions will be introduced in the next edition of the conference in Abu Dhabi, 4-7 November 2024. The event's efforts are based on the desire to shape the energy, economic and emissions relationship to promote growth.
The wide-ranging conference and exhibition program will bring together energy transition stakeholders from around the world to act as a catalyst for innovation, cooperation and energy transition action, in support of a fair and structured transition.
